The Fredericktown Ferry is the last of three original ferries to run across the Monongahela River in Washington County.
This ferry was under private ownership until 1969 when it was closed due to decreased ridership and the inability to make a profit. Due to the efforts of the local residents, Fayette and Washington Counties formed a Ferry Commission in the early 1970's and began seeking means to reopen the Fredericktown Ferry.
A feasibility study was done and grants were sought to fund this project. In 1979 the Fredericktown Ferry began operating again with an agreement established between Washington and Fayette Counties.
Fayette County was to operate and maintain the ferry and Washington would contribute 50% of the costs. Liquid Fuels dollars for each county were designated as the funding source for the ferry. The Fredericktown Ferry continued to operate under this agreement until 2003 when the agreement was amended.
